Case Studies
Ne-yo - So Sick
Director: Hype
Williams
Producer: Quincy
Jones
Date: Oct 7, 2009
This video is a narrative
and performance based because Ne-yo lip sings as well as plays the guy in
the video that is very alone. The narrative story in
the video is that the male role (Ne-yo) broke up with his girlfriend and
everything reminds him of her, so throughout the video you see him by himself
or with his girlfriend while they are arguing or when they are playing in the
snow. He’s sick of all the memories and the radio playing love songs because he
knows she’ll never come back to him. And it shows how depressed and annoyed he
is by the break up that he had. In other videos it could be a
possibility to have him lip sing and a completely different person act the
narrative character.
The themes are denial,
sadness, regret and loneliness. The only special effect that is used in this video is the radio tuning to find a station because he ends with the lyrics ‘why can’t I turn off the radio.
The mise-en-scene in this video has to do with the feelings of the main character (Ne-yo). It’s set in winter time where there is a lot of snow and he has to wear a jacket which tells the audience that he is really cold when she is not around him. He feels very alone
The editing technique that is used is having three separate visuals; the outer parts show mountains of snow throughout the video. In the middle it shows the narrative story of the couple play fighting in the snow, Ne-yo being on his own and extreme close ups to things that he talks about in the song like the phone. There is a close up of the fire when they are in the house together which connotes that when they are together he feels warm. At the start of the video there is an establishing shot that shows the setting that the video is going to be taking place. This a good use because it gives the audience and instant idea where it is and that it’s quite a secluded area where if someone lives alone they would feel quite lonely. The first scene that comes up is an extreme close up of Ne-yo’s face where he looks quite depressed and the top and bottom border shows the dark mountains. The sky has dark clouds so it foreshadows the idea that something bad is going to happen; which happens later on as we learn that he’s broken up with his girlfriend.
The target audience for this song would be people in the same situation as Ne-yo; being alone because his girlfriend has left him but now he wants her back and everything reminds him of her. So it would mostly be aimed at late teens to middle aged men and women who have spent a while in a relationship and something broke them apart.
The ideas I got from this video is the flashback of them fighting, having her face show up on the screen every couple of seconds and showing the good times they had playing in the snow. I will use these techniques because it gets the audience to see the impact of their relationship that they were really close so the fact that they are not together anymore has an emotional reaction of some sort. Having her face up every couple of seconds allows the audience to see the change of expression and because she has the power of how the male performer acts it’s good to see how he is affected by how she acts.
Trey Songz - Heart Attack
Director:
Benny Boom
Producer: Benny Blanco, Rico
Love
Date: 4th May 2012
Date: 4th May 2012
This video is both narrative
and performance based because there
are parts where Trey Songs looks into the camera and lip sings the lyrics to
the song, but he also plays the narrative part of being the boyfriend. What we see in the video is a series of events where the
present is in colour and show them arguing and the black and white bits show
the good times.
The themes are
heartbreak, tragedy and love.
The camera angles
in this video there are a lot of extreme close ups to show the emotion of the
main character (Trey Songz) which usually shows him sad because of the way his
relationship is affecting him. There are also over the shoulder shots to show
his love interest walking away from him or usually throwing verbal abuse to
him. When they are on ‘the better side of their relationship it’s usually a
long shot to show the stuff they do together and to also show how their body
language is; that it’s care free and they don’t want to be anywhere else but
with each other. There is also use of midshot to show more of both of their
emotion.
The special effect
that is used is the defibrillators used to bring people back to life which goes
with the title of the song ‘Heart Attack and also tells us that there is going
to be some kind of storyline in this video. There is also the machine at the
end to show that he is alive because of the beeps of his heartbeat. The heart
beat is also used at the start to connote that he is trying to recollect his
memory while being brought back to life.
The mise-en-scene
in this video has a very modern setting. The characters in the video are well
off so they wear the expensive suits the woman is very dressed up when she goes
out.
In the editing
techniques there is a lot of cutting on action from Trey Songz singing to
when they’re having arguments, then to when they are on good terms and to the
main story line of what caused the actual heart attack which is the car
accident caused by him not paying attention because they’re arguing. So the
cutting rate goes really fast; doesn’t last more than 5 seconds.
The target audience
for this video will mostly likely be women because they are the main target
audience of Trey Songz. But this particular song and video could relate to men
too because they go through the same thing that happens. They are encouraged to
buy the record because of the lyrics in the song, it relates to the situation
every couple goes through which is being in a relationship and something
happens that makes them want to leave but love keeps them together.
The ideas I can
take from this video is the editing technique of showing the past in black and
white so that the audience can see the clear difference to the past and
present. I also like the idea of having the heartbeat as him trying to recollect
his memory.
Beyoncé- If I Were A Boy
Director: Jake
Nava
Producer: Toby
Gad and Beyonce Knowles
Date: Oct 2, 2009
Like the other two videos this is also a narrative and performance based video. However in this video Beyonce’s
performance of lip singing happens at the end of the video. The rest of the
video she plays the narrative part of the wife.
The themes in
this video are trust and love.
The special effect
used in this video is the sound of the bullet when Beyoncé shoots. There
aren’t that many special effects because it is supposed to be a simple story.
And that is what I like about this video
The mise-en-scene
in this video
The editing techniques
that are used are things like the cutting rate are not that quick because
it is two storylines that are shown and doesn’t need a lot of cuts because it’s
not a flashback.
The target audience for
this video and song are male and female in their late teens to middle age
people in couples because they are the ones most likely to experience what is
shown in the video.
The ideas I got
from this video is having the person that is hurt look into the camera because
it has an effect in the audience which makes than feel hurt in some kind of way.
I also like the way that it is a simple video but it has an big effect on the
audience and that is what inspires me about this video.

We now need to:
- give the release form to our male and female roles so that they can agree to be used in our video.
- finish our storyboard scene by scene, but we will look over it to make sure that we didnt miss anything in or to add in more shots.
- we also need to do 2 more recces for locations along with the risk assessment.
- finish the production schedule so it will be ready for next week which is when we want to start our filming; hopefully.

Update
What we've done so far:
- drawn out most of the story board with the shots and pictures to say what happens scene by scene in detail.
- We've also done auditions to find the main roles of the male and female. We just need to make a group decison on who we want to choose.
- We've also seperated the locations for each other so that we can do the risk assesments and the recces.
- Choose actors
- Finish story board
- Do production schedule for the shoots
- Do the risk assesments and recces
